Revelation 8

In chapter 6 we saw the opening of the first 6 of 7 seals. Then in chapter 7 we saw the protection of God’s people from the judgments coming. Now, in chapter 8 we have the opening of the 7th seal.

When the 7th seal is opened there is silence in heaven for about half an hour. After this 7 trumpets will start to sound announcing judgment and destruction on earth. But first there is a note that the prayers of saints are rising up to God like incense.

Like the seals and the 4 horsemen, the 7 trumpets announce progressive judgments on the earth, but this sounds even more severe. The first 4 are found in verses 6-12, and verse 13 is an ominous prelude to the final 3 trumpets: And angel flying and saying with a loud voice, “Woe, woe, woe to the inhabitants of the earth, because of the remaining blasts of the trumpet of the three angels who are about to sound!”

The prayers of Christians are describe like _______________________. What is the significance of this comparison.

Browse over the judgments in verse 6-12. Does it sound like what is happening in the world today? Why should we be cautious about making that application?

  1. I think about those verses like this, man has created a lot of damage and destruction. Many think it is getting worse and worse, but like everything else, it doesn’t come close to what God can do. For example, God created us with a functioning brain, organs, heart, muscles, etc. Doctors have taken most of their lives to become experts in ONE of those areas. My point is I believe those days will be like nothing we have ever witnessed on this earth. I am going to work harder for a very bright and shiny seal!!

  2. ‘Then another angel, having a golden censer, came and stood at the altar. He was given much incense, that he should offer it with the prayers of all the saints upon the golden altar which was before the throne. ‘Revelation 8:3 ‘And the smoke of the incense, with the prayers of the saints, ascended before God from the angel’s hand. ‘Revelation 8:4

It’s as if the saints and the angels were together offering incense & prayer to God in honor to God, as much as they could offer, and support and show that they were totally, in all ways with God in his every wish, commamd, & desire/wish. they were totally honoring God in every way.

the judgement in v. 6–12, in NO WAY are in any way similiar to what we are currently going through with the coronavirus. We are presently dealing with lots of death, from a highly contageous, humanly transled desease/virus. What the angels were doing was creating distarous distructions to lots of land and some people, along with the land destruction. It is totally different

  3. Interesting point Amy, and I think I agree, that what is described in Revelation is much more severe than what we are experiencing on earth right now.

As far as prayers and incense…the picture is a good one – our prayers ascend to God like incense rises up. And then it says the angel took the censer, filled it with fire from the altar, and threw it to the earth. It sounds to be like these judgments on earth were a response to the prayers of the saints. This is similar to the prayer of the martyrs in 6:10.

  4. I think it is good to note here how important the burning of incense was to worship and praise God during the time of the Old Testament. It was through this avenue the Jewish nation pleased God. Lev. 2:16 and 1 Chronicles 23:13. Today our prayers are offered up as a sweet fragrance to acknowledge Gods power and glory. Through our prayers we are pleasing to God. This helps me to realize just how important prayer is and to do more of it.

      1. Thanks Jimmy. Before this Revelations 8 lesson, I don’t think I realized just how much our prayers mean & matter to God!! These are such wonderful lessons–both of them. I wish we could do them always!πŸ’—πŸ’™πŸ’šπŸ’›πŸ’œπŸ’πŸ’ž
