The account of Jesus being tempted in the wilderness is found in Matthew 4, Mark 1, and Luke 4. What event immediately precedes the temptation in the wilderness?
All 3 accounts emphasize that He was led by the spirit into the wilderness to be tempted, as if this was necessary according to God’s will. What lesson might we learn from that?
What do you see as the “essence” of each temptation? How was Satan appealing to Jesus?
- Command the stones to become bread –
- Throw yourself down (from the pinnacle of the temple) –
- All these (kingdoms) I will give you if you fall down and worship me –
Try to come up with an comparable example of each temptation in our own lives.
What do you learn from how Jesus responded to each of the temptations? (Consider also Psalm 119:11). What Old Testament book does Jesus quote in His response to each temptation?
